Hiking the W6 Balcony Walk offers dramatic views of Wadi Ghul. The path sits right on the edge of the canyon. Parents must evaluate their children's hiking experience before attempting the trail. Strict rules and constant attention are necessary for a safe visit.
Is the Balcony Walk safe for kids?
It is safe only if children are strictly supervised and follow safety instructions.
The trail has no safety barriers separating hikers from the canyon edge. Wadi Ghul plunges nearly 1,000 meters deep just steps from the path. You must keep a close eye on children at all times and ensure they stay well back from the cliff edge.
What is the trail terrain like?
The path is rocky, uneven, and runs continuously along the canyon rim.
Hikers walk along a rocky ledge that leads to the abandoned village of As Sab. The ground requires sturdy hiking boots with good grip. Children must walk carefully on loose stones without running near the drop-offs.

What is the right age for this hike?
There is no official minimum age, but the trail suits older, mature children best.
Because the hike takes 3 to 4 hours, children need good stamina. They must also have the maturity to understand the extreme heights and follow safety rules. Toddlers can ride in a secure hiking backpack with an experienced adult.

What should families pack?
Bring 2 to 3 liters of water per person, snacks, and sun protection.
The mountain climate requires preparation. Pack a warm jacket or fleece for cool evenings. Temperatures average 10 to 15°C lower than Muscat. Sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and a first aid kit with blister plasters are also essential.

When is the best time to hike with children?
Hike between October and April and start early in the morning.
Starting early helps you avoid the midday sun and ensures you return well before dark. Winter temperatures range from 5°C to 22°C. This makes the 7 to 8 km walk much more comfortable for younger hikers.
Are there toilets on the trail?
No, there are no facilities or shops along the Balcony Walk.
Families must use the restroom before arriving at Al Khitaym village. You must also carry away all your trash to protect the mountain environment. Bring enough food and a packed lunch to sustain everyone for the 3 to 4-hour journey.

Questions travellers ask
Is there an entrance fee for children?
No. There are no entrance or parking fees required to visit Jebel Shams or hike the Balcony Walk.
Do I need a 4x4 to reach the start of the trail with my family?
A 4WD vehicle is highly recommended. The final 7 to 8 kilometers of the mountain access road are steep, rocky, and unpaved.
Can we camp near the trail with kids?
Yes, free wild camping is permitted. You must camp in flat, safe areas away from the immediate canyon rim and hiking paths.
